    Summary:

    Sunday 26th August
    9.30am–10.30am: Session One
Exploring the world through picture books
Presenter: Judy Garner, Ivanhoe East Primary School
Co-presenter: Barbara Bell, Serpell Primary School
This workshop is designed for primary school teachers who are looking to use picture books to explore Geography with their students. Picture books can be used as a prompt to asking geographical questions about features of the world. As a core resource to investigate place, space, environment and change, picture books offer a stimulus to reflect and look ahead to future action.

    1.30pm–2.30pm: Session Two
    Geography for primary school teachers
Presenters: Melinda Rankin, Serpell Primary School and Terry McMeekin, Author
One of the most exciting pieces of integrated curriculum produced for many years and freely available on the Internet is the ABC series My Place. This rich resource supports many themes e.g. mapping/place, sustainability, family, change, indigenous and migrant communities. Primary school teachers are preparing for the introduction of Geography into the generalist classroom. Melinda will demonstrate engaging and motivating ways for primary school teachers to teach Geography focussing on Years 3–6 with clear links to the draft Australian Curriculum. Terry will focus on junior secondary and its relevance to Geography, History and English.

    Tuesday 28th August
Fieldwork (see program for session times)
    “My Place” … the fieldwork
    Presenter: Terry McMeekin, Author
Using Melbourne’s CBD, Exhibition Gardens and the Melbourne Museum exhibit, Terry shows how teachers could enrich their teaching of “My Place” with a fieldwork activity. It would include activities suitable for upper primary and junior secondary classes including mapping tasks and data collection for later Geography Teachers Association of Victoria (GTAV) annual conference.
